Episode 18

Death of a King

Bordering at its western boundary the Bristol Semi-Ring Road, the village forms a large eastern cluster of development on a raised area of land in the parish. Pucklechurch is celebrated in the pages of history for a large and handsome palace which once existed within its boundaries and was occupied by the Saxon King Edmund the First.

At the end of the Feast of St Augustine, when the king was due to make his speech, fate stepped in and dealt a heavy blow.

Here the little known story of a beloved king and his untimely death in this quiet part of England.
